The basic design for the pistols for use by the Royal Navy stayed essentially the same from the time of the Seven Years War through to the Napoleonic Wars. These rugged, simple weapons were both practical, being equipped with a belt hook, and reliable. The perfect weapon for boarding an enemy vessel. Although both the short and long versions of this pistol continued in use, the 9 inch barrel model with its steel ramrod became the preferred model.
