These gorgeous pure silk miser’s purses are sprang woven by hand by the amazing Carol James of Winnipeg. They are exact copies of the one found on the body of Admiral Lord Nelson after he was shot during the Battle of Trafalgar in 1805. They were used in period by both men and women to hold coins and occasionally small notes and other precious items, and they are typically folded in half and slung through a belt or over the waistbelt of a man’s trousers, or carried in a woman’s reticule or basket. To insert coins, both brass rings are moved to one end, freeing the other end to access through the opening at the center of the purse. Once the coins are inserted, the ring is returned, trapping the coins away from the opening. It was common practice to keep larger denominations at one end of the purse and smaller at the other. Approximately 38 cm (14″) long.
